sir,
249
APR dovernment House.
Hong-Kong,2th. February, 1901.
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your telegram of the 6th.instant, asking in reply to my te-
legram of the 21st.ultimo, for what purpose three Sanitary
Inspectors are required and what salary I propose that they
should draw, and further stating that only 2 new First Class
Inspectors were provided for in the Estimates of 1901.
2. A misunderstanding appears to have arisen,
for 3 new First Class Sanitary Inspectors are actually provi-
ded for in the Estimates for 1901, two appearing under the
heading "Medical Officer of Health" and one under the heading
"Sanitary Surveyor".
3. In the total number of 8 First Class San1-
tary Inspectors thus provided for in the Estimates, there are
at present 4 vacancies, one of which may be filled locally by
promotion, leaving 3 posts unfilled; and it was in order that
these officers might be appointed without delay that I addres
ed to you my telegram of the 21st,ultimo. They are urgently re-
quired, as I explained in my further telegram of the 25th.in-
stant,
in view of a possible outbreak of bubonic plague.
The Right Honourable
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN,M.P.
